OnwardCircle guide
Build a support network that can actually respond
A useful support network is not simply a list of emergency contacts. It is a group of people who understand the practical roles they may be asked to fill.
Build around clear people, clear roles, backups and regular review. Keep practical planning separate from formal legal authority.
Choose people by role, not only by closeness
The person you trust most emotionally may not be the best person for every practical task. Availability, location, reliability and comfort with the responsibility all matter.
Separate local response from decision support
A nearby neighbor may be ideal for home access or pet care, while a long-distance friend may be excellent at medical communication or keeping family informed.
Ask before assigning responsibility
A support role should not be a surprise. Explain what you are asking, check that the person is comfortable with it and make it easy for them to decline.
Use primary and backup contacts
Important responsibilities should not rely on a single person. A backup makes the plan more resilient when someone is unavailable.
Share only what each person needs
A key holder does not necessarily need medical information. A medical advocate does not automatically need financial information. Match information access to the role.
Keep contact details and expectations current
Review the circle after moves, relationship changes, health changes, job changes or other events that affect availability.
